Thrus is a co-founder of GEM, who served as CEO and CIO of the Duke University Management Company ("DUMAC") from 2000-2007 where he managed a $7.7 billion portfolio. During his tenure the portfolio's peer ranking improved from 4th quartile to top decile. Prior to his time at DUMAC, he held banking, portfolio manager and senior advisor roles at JP Morgan in the US and abroad. Thrus is a member of the Board of Directors of DUMAC, The Conservation Fund (Arlington, VA), and TreesCharlotte. He is a former board member of The Investment Fund for Foundations (TIFF) and The Triangle Land Conservancy (Raleigh, NC), and he served two terms on the Rockefeller Foundation's Finance & Investment Committee. He graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in Southeast Asian History (honors) from Brown University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
